El Salvador advances Surf City tourism strategy

The government of Nayib Bukele is advancing the ‘Surf City’ initiative, a strategic tourism project designed to establish El Salvador as an international destination for surfing and coastal tourism. The project focuses heavily on the La Libertad department, specifically targeting well-known beaches such as El Tunco, El Sunzal, El Zonte, and La Bocana.

To support this goal, the government has invested in infrastructure, including improved road connectivity, ecological boardwalks, and enhanced public spaces. The initiative also aims to boost the local economy through entrepreneurship markets and recreational activities for both domestic and foreign visitors.

As part of this strategy, the region is hosting major sporting events, including the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 2026. These events include competitive surfing, free lessons, and wellness activities like pilates, alongside local markets to promote national products and talent.
