El Salvador considers four-day work week proposal

El Salvador’s Superior Labor Council is set to discuss the modernization of labor regulations, including a potential transition to a four-day work week with three consecutive days of rest. Labor Minister Rolando Castro stated that the proposal aims to adapt the country’s labor market to global shifts and improve competitiveness.

The discussion involves representatives from the government, employers, and workers. While some industrial sectors, such as textiles, have expressed interest in reviewing schedules to accommodate continuous 24-hour production technologies, any changes will require unanimous consensus from all sectors within the Council.

Minister Castro clarified that while the debate is active, no final decisions have been made and rumors regarding immediate implementation are false. He emphasized that the goal is to foster better work-life balance and economic development without compromising existing worker rights. Any resulting proposals must eventually be evaluated by the Legislative Assembly.
