El Salvador criticizes UN effectiveness at General Assembly

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, El Salvador's Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco criticized the organization's effectiveness in addressing global crises. Hill Tinoco questioned the relevance of the UN, asking, “Where are the United Nations?” in reference to ongoing wars, famines, and humanitarian conflicts.

She argued that the organization's legitimacy is not built solely through resolutions, but through its ability to “truly preserve life and guarantee a dignified future for all people.” Hill Tinoco called for a reform of the global order toward a multilateralism that respects state sovereignty while remaining capable of decisive action on borderless issues.

Additionally, the minister defended the security policies of President Nayib Bukele's administration. She highlighted El Salvador's domestic transformation, noting that the country's homicide rate decreased from 103 per 100,000 inhabitants to 1.3 per 100,000 inhabitants.
