El Salvador declares national emergency amid Super El Niño drought

El Salvador has declared a six-month national state of emergency to combat severe meteorological and agricultural drought caused by the Super El Niño phenomenon. The Legislative Assembly approved the measure with 59 votes in favor and one against. The declaration empowers the government to reallocate public funds, coordinate international humanitarian aid, and implement measures to protect food security and basic grain storage.

To support the response, the United States has committed $55 million in aid. Of this, $25 million is being channeled through the United Nations to provide immediate relief to the most affected communities, while an additional $30 million is designated for preventative actions and long-term support for vulnerable families.

Key government agencies have been assigned specific roles: Civil Protection will coordinate the national response plan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will manage international cooperation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock will oversee food security, and the Ministry of Defense will handle humanitarian logistics.
