El Salvador drought ends as rains break severe dry spell, Honduras faces looming water crisis

El Salvador experienced a severe meteorological drought from 13 July to 6 August, with up to 22 consecutive dry days in the eastern region. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) reported that the drought, classified as severe, caused a heat wave that has now ended thanks to recent rains, which also lowered temperatures across the country. Forecasts indicate continued rainfall in central and western areas, while the eastern zone will see reduced precipitation but remain warm.

In neighboring Honduras, prolonged drought and the effects of El Niño and a “super‑Niño” have strained water reservoirs that supply Tegucigalpa, threatening the water supply for an estimated 1.3‑1.5 million people. Experts warn that without a declared water emergency and a national coordination centre, the crisis could destabilise the government of President Xiomara Asfura. Priorities include securing water for hospitals, health centres, and shelters, and distributing water via tanker trucks to vulnerable communities.
