El Salvador extends state of exception through September 2026
El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has approved a 30-day extension of the country’s state of exception, which will remain in effect until September 27, 2026. The measure, approved with 57 votes, marks the 54th renewal of the security policy implemented on March 27, 2022.
Government officials and legislators, including deputy Walter Alemán, cited significant security improvements as the primary justification for the extension. They reported that the country has accumulated 1,190 days without homicides since the regime began and noted that over 92,800 suspected gang members have been arrested. Officials also highlighted a decrease in the homicide rate and a rise in international tourism as positive outcomes of the security measures.
However, the extension faces criticism from human rights advocates. The NGO Socorro Jurídico Humanitario (SJH) reported that at least 564 detainees have died while in state custody. Critics and analysts have also raised concerns regarding the suspension of constitutional guarantees, such as the right to defense and the privacy of communications, suggesting the measures may be used to suppress political dissent.
