El Salvador integrates Bitcoin into culture amid transparency concerns
El Salvador is expanding its Bitcoin-related initiatives through a series of cultural and economic events scheduled for November. The program includes Bitcoin Histórico on November 11 and 12, followed by the Renaissance Rodeo on November 13. These events aim to connect Bitcoin circular economies with local traditions such as ranching and food production. Other scheduled activities include the Bitcoin Capital Summit, the EmTech AI Conference, and the Global Bitcoin Circular Economies Summit.
However, civil society organizations in El Salvador have raised concerns regarding the government's Bitcoin strategy. An NGO has warned of potential corruption risks due to a lack of transparency in how the state purchases, custodians, and registers its Bitcoin reserves. Critics point to the absence of independent audits and verifiable details regarding purchase prices, fund origins, and the management of private keys, noting that official announcements often occur via social media without supporting accounting documentation.
