El Salvador marks five years of Bitcoin as legal tender

Five years after El Salvador became the first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, the results of the experiment show a mixed outcome. While the policy positioned the country as a global hub for the cryptocurrency community and solidified President Nayib Bukele’s international standing, it has struggled to meet its primary domestic objectives.

Initial promises included providing financial inclusion to the unbanked population and reducing the high costs of remittances, which account for nearly one-fifth of the nation's GDP. However, research indicates that mass adoption among citizens did not occur. Studies suggest that those using Bitcoin tend to be young, urban, and already part of the formal banking system. The state-sponsored Chivo Wallet saw limited daily use, with many users only engaging with the platform to claim initial welcome bonuses.

Furthermore, experts note that the policy has not significantly increased foreign direct investment in the sector or effectively lowered remittance costs as intended. Despite these domestic shortcomings, the move transformed the theoretical possibility of nation-state cryptocurrency adoption into a reality, shifting the global conversation regarding sovereign digital money.
