El Salvador: New judicial council sworn in and FMLN announces 2027 candidates

The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador has sworn in 14 lawyers to the National Council of the Judiciary (CNJ) for the 2026-2031 term. The council members, including seven principals and seven alternates, are scheduled to assume their roles on September 22. Their mandate includes ensuring the independence, efficiency, and transparency of the Judicial Branch, as well as selecting qualified candidates for judges and magistrates.

In separate political developments, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) has presented its presidential candidacy for the 2027 elections. During its 47th Ordinary National Convention, the party also introduced over 700 candidates for legislative, mayoral, and municipal council positions. The FMLN leadership emphasized a platform focused on social justice, public health, and economic issues such as employment and the cost of living.
