El Salvador VMT detains 46 heavy cargo units in road inspections

El Salvador’s Viceministry of Transport (VMT) has detained 46 heavy cargo units during intensified road inspection operations. Vice Minister of Transport Nelson Reyes stated that the primary goal of these seizures is not to permanently remove vehicles from circulation, but to ensure compliance with safety and legal regulations.

Most of the detained units have already been released after owners renewed expired circulation cards and paid outstanding fines. Reyes clarified that the National Civil Police coordinates these enforcement actions.

The intensification of these controls follows instructions from President Nayib Bukele. To support these efforts, the VMT has launched a national call for new technical vehicle inspection workshops to expand coverage for approximately 158,000 vehicles.
