El Salvador weather stations record historic heat spikes

Multiple weather stations in El Salvador have recorded historic high temperatures during August. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) reported that the Sensuntepeque station reached a new record maximum of 38.8 °C, surpassing the previous high of 36 °C set in August 1991.

Other significant temperature spikes were noted across the country. The Cerrón Grande station recorded 39.4 °C, breaking a record set only a week prior. In La Unión, the Santa Rosa de Lima station reached 43.9 °C, while Acahuapa, San Miguel, and San Francisco Gotera also reported temperatures exceeding 40 °C.

MARN confirmed that a third period of meteorological drought began on August 7, characterized by more than twelve consecutive dry days. This drought affects several departments, including Santa Ana, Ahuachapán, Sonsonate, Chalatenango, Cabañas, La Paz, San Vicente, Usulután, San Miguel, Morazán, and La Unión.
