El Salvadoran immigrant charged with fentanyl distribution near Virginia school

Isaac Melendez-Carranza, a 31-year-old undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, has been arrested and charged with distributing fentanyl within 1,000 feet of a high school in Virginia.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Melendez-Carranza had been under a final order of removal since July 18, 2024. Although he was encountered in Sterling, Virginia, on August 16, 2024, DHS officials stated that no enforcement action was taken at that time, attributing the delay to current administration policies.

Melendez-Carranza was taken into custody on August 20 and is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. ICE has lodged a detainer at the facility. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has linked the suspect to drug overdoses involving local students.
