El Salvador secures $2.9B investment and inaugurates binational bridge

El Salvador has secured a $2.9 billion investment agreement with Cox Group, the largest private investment in the nation's history. The project, representing approximately 7% of the country's GDP, focuses on modernizing energy and water infrastructure. Key allocations include $1.8 billion for natural gas infrastructure—featuring a 380 MW generation capacity and an onshore storage terminal—$300 million for a 440 MW battery energy storage system, $200 million for solar power plants, and $600 million for water and sanitation projects. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on bunker fuel and lower household electricity rates.

In a separate infrastructure development, President Nayib Bukele inaugurated the General Manuel José Arce binational bridge. The 420-meter structure, costing $32.6 million, connects La Hachadura in El Salvador with Pedro de Alvarado in Guatemala. Designed with anti-seismic features to withstand seasonal flooding of the Paz River, the bridge is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, and the movement of approximately 1.5 million vehicles annually.

In Uruguay, Solaria Energía y Medio Ambiente has signed a $5.7 billion agreement to develop a technological park. This project includes the construction of 500 MW capacity data centers and 350 MW of solar photovoltaic generation across the departments of Canelones, San José, and Florida. The investment is expected to create 3,100 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent positions.
