El Salvador's FMLN announces legislative candidates for San Salvador and diaspora
The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) officially presented its slate of candidates for the Legislative Assembly seats representing San Salvador and Salvadorans living abroad. The list for San Salvador is headed by Karina Sosa, a current member of the Central American Parliament, with Liliana Andrade, Gloria Anaya and several others also on the ticket. The diaspora list is led by former foreign‑minister deputy Carlos Castaneda. In addition to the legislative race, the party will contest the presidential election with Rafael Aguirre as its candidate and Madaí Santos for vice‑president.
Political analyst Walter Araujo warned that both the FMLN and the right‑wing ARENA face a deepening crisis. He suggested the parties could end up without legislative representation and criticized Aguirre’s proposals to decide issues such as same‑sex marriage and abortion through plebiscites. Araujo also noted ARENA’s difficulties in fielding candidates for many municipal councils, underscoring the broader challenges confronting the opposition ahead of the upcoming elections.
