KIB-TEK strike triggers solidarity actions and bribery probe
The strike by the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority Employees' Union (El-Sen) has entered its fifth day, triggering a wave of solidarity strikes from other public sector unions. The Federation of Cyprus Turkish Trade Unions (TÜRKSEN) announced that unions including the Municipal Workers' Union (BES) will launch phased strikes starting Monday to support El-Sen.
El-Sen's demands include improved occupational health and safety, transparent promotion processes, and regular recruitment. Despite a Cabinet decision to postpone the strike for 60 days, El-Sen President Ahmet Tuğcu stated the union refuses to accept the ban and will continue its actions.
Concurrently, KIB-TEK has reported suspicions that some union members have damaged institutional lines, leading to police investigations and potential disciplinary actions. Furthermore, police are investigating allegations of a $200,000 bribe involving KIB-TEK officials regarding a scrap metal tender, following reports of irregularities in the bidding process.
