El Tepozteco access rehabilitation postponed until 2027

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has announced that the rehabilitation of the access path to the El Tepozteco archaeological site in Morelos has been postponed until 2027 due to budget constraints.

Víctor Hugo Valencia Valera, director of the INAH Center in Morelos, stated that a technical preliminary project is currently being developed to improve the general infrastructure and the ascent route. The intervention aims to address the wear on the path and ensure safety for the high volume of visitors, which included over 693,000 people in 2025.

To address local concerns regarding the impact on the natural and heritage environment, INAH is considering a public consultation with the community before proceeding. The project seeks to improve the approximately 2.5-kilometer trail to reduce accident risks for the thousands of tourists who visit the site monthly.
