El Toscal neighborhood celebrates festivals and historical heritage
The El Toscal neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to celebrate the ninth edition of its local festivals from September 25 to 30. Organized by the Luz y Vida Neighbors Association with support from the local government, the program includes musical performances, cultural activities, gastronomy, and the XI Romería of Cristo de Paso Alto.
El Toscal is recognized as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) due to its historical and ethnographic significance. The area is notable for its 'ciudadelas'—collective housing structures built primarily between 1895 and 1905. These small dwellings, often around 14 square meters, featured private living spaces but required families to share essential services such as kitchens and toilets, reflecting the urban living conditions of the working class during the city's rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
