El Villar inaugurates Don Quijote and Sancho Panza sculpture

The town of El Villar has inaugurated a new sculpture titled “En un lugar de La Mancha… El Villar” to mark the beginning of the Fiestas del Agua. The artwork, created by woodcarver Máximo Sáez, was crafted from the trunk of an old plane tree in Plaza del Trillo that had died due to disease.

Sáez performed the work altruistically, using chisels and gouges to transform the 50-year-old tree into a symbolic tribute to Spanish literature. The sculpture depicts Don Quijote on a pedestal shaped like an open book, while the bust of Sancho Panza emerges from a natural cavity in the wood. The artist stated the goal was to give a second life to the tree while beautifying a cherished local corner.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor José Antonio Barba and several local councilors.
