Elanco launches oral treatment for feline diabetes in Brazil

Elanco Animal Health has announced the launch of Bexacat (bexagliflozin) in Brazil, the first and only daily oral tablet approved for the treatment of feline diabetes mellitus. The medication is intended for newly diagnosed, clinically stable cats that have not yet undergone insulin treatment.

Bexacat serves as a therapeutic alternative to traditional daily insulin injections, providing rapid and continuous glycemic control with a minimal risk of clinical hypoglycemia. The oral administration is designed to simplify management routines for both veterinary teams and pet owners, potentially improving treatment adherence.

Feline diabetes is an endocrine disorder that can lead to severe complications, including neuropathy, urinary tract infections, and diabetic ketoacidosis if left untreated. While affecting an estimated 0.5% of the feline population, the frequency of the disease is rising due to factors such as increased life expectancy, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles.
