ELAS condemns attacks on gender studies as threat to democracy

The Social Policy department of ELAS issued a statement denouncing recent attacks on women’s and gender studies, describing them as an assault on scientific knowledge and democratic institutions. ELAS argued that targeting these fields—both inside and outside parliament—reflects an anti‑scientific, retrograde mindset aimed at undermining academic freedom, gender equality, and human‑rights research.

The organization warned that characterising scientific research as “dangerous” for students and defaming universities jeopardises not only the specific discipline but also society’s ability to develop evidence‑based public policies.
