ELAS criticizes Greece's Home Renovation program targets

The ELAS organization has criticized the Greek government, claiming the ‘Home Renovation’ program is failing to meet its objectives. While the government set a target to reopen 25,000 closed residences, current data suggests only about 9,000 eligibility certificates have been issued. The government estimates the final number will reach approximately 11,000, leaving a significant gap between the official goal and actual results.

ELAS further noted that these certificates represent only the first stage of administrative review. The organization also raised concerns regarding the high budget, which they argue does not sufficiently increase housing supply because funds can also be used for already occupied homes. Additionally, digital bureaucracy and platform malfunctions have reportedly hindered the process for owners.

ELAS has called on the government to take several actions, including extending the eligibility application deadline beyond August 31, 2026, and explicitly including closed properties acquired within 2026. They also requested the repair of the digital platform, a review of citizens excluded due to technical errors, and the monthly publication of detailed progress data.
