ELAS poised to challenge Mitsotakis as Greek left pole, says Achtsioglou

Former minister Efí Achtsioglou told Prwto Thema that the party ELAS, led by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, could become the main left‑wing pole capable of confronting New Democracy and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. She argued that Greek society needs an effective opposition with a fully articulated programme to change the government’s direction.

Achtsioglou highlighted ELAS’s ideological identity, noting its blend of radical left, environmentalism and social democracy, and referenced the party’s seven commitments as a programme framework. She said the next step is to develop a detailed governing plan, defended Tsipras against criticism of lacking a programme, and stressed his personal charisma and closeness to voters. Although she has no personal contact with Tsipras, she affirmed the necessity of a strong left alternative and defended ELAS’s recent tax‑cut proposals, such as the reduction of dividend taxes.
