Elateia farmers seek wildfire compensation via parliamentary inquiry

Giannis Sarakiotis, the Member of Parliament for Phthiotis, has submitted a parliamentary question regarding compensation for farmers in Elateia who suffered losses during the wildfire on August 23, 2026. The fire impacted hundreds of acres of small-scale crops, primarily affecting olive producers and causing significant loss of income.

Sarakiotis highlighted concerns that the current regulatory framework, specifically regarding ELGA (Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization) regulations, may prevent farmers from receiving state aid if the total burned area does not meet specific size thresholds. He argued that actual damage to an agricultural holding depends on the severity of losses to crops and production means rather than just the total acreage burned.

The MP is seeking written clarification on the status of damage assessment, the number of affected olive trees and farms, and which specific compensation measures the government intends to activate. He also called for the establishment of a special program for damages from smaller-scale fires and a revision of ELGA regulations to better protect the primary sector.
