Elazığ coffeehouse observers sit at separate tables following luck dispute

In a coffeehouse in Elazığ, Turkey, a dispute among okey players over perceived bad luck has resulted in a humorous local phenomenon. The incident began when a player, frustrated by a lack of luck, blamed a bystander—known locally as a ‘yancı’ (an observer or side-player)—and removed them from the table.

Following the confrontation, a winning customer displayed a custom poster in the establishment that reads, ‘You are not bringing me luck, so I beat the bystander.’ This humorous response has caused observers and bystanders to begin sitting at separate tables rather than crowding around the game tables.

Coffeehouse owner Erhan Çelik noted that while the poster was intended as a joke, it has drawn significant attention from university students and passersby who stop to take photos. Çelik emphasized that these observers are essential to the coffeehouse atmosphere, noting that they often transition from watching to playing within an hour.
