Elba Island faces structural hydrogeological risks after severe weather

The island of Elba has been heavily impacted by intense rainfall, causing significant damage, disruption, and concern for local citizens and economic activities.

Local administrator Mattia Guerrini has called for a shift away from reactive, isolated repairs toward a comprehensive structural plan to secure the entire territory. Guerrini emphasized that addressing individual drainage issues or ditches is insufficient to tackle the island's systemic hydrogeological fragility. He urged the Tuscany Region to take responsibility for soil defense and hydraulic safety, noting that the necessary resources and planning exceed the capacity of local municipalities alone.
