Elba Island: Roman dolium and potential shipwreck discovered

Archaeological monitoring in the waters surrounding Elba Island has led to the discovery of a large Roman dolium and a potential shipwreck. The dolium, a massive terracotta container used in antiquity to transport goods such as wine, oil, or grain, was found in the sea area between the Piombino Channel and the Tuscan Archipelago.

The findings were identified through collaborative efforts involving the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Pisa and Livorno, the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Florence, and the Carabinieri Underwater Unit of Genoa. A new underwater investigation campaign is scheduled to begin in the autumn to further study the site and the possible shipwreck.
