Elbit Systems expands military influence in the Balkans
The Western Balkans are experiencing an accelerated arms race characterized by the increasing integration of Israeli military technology. The Israeli defense multinational Elbit Systems is central to this trend, supplying advanced weaponry to opposing strategic blocs in the region.
On one side, the company provides equipment to the Tirana, Pristina, and Zagreb axis, while simultaneously supplying the Serbian bloc consisting of Belgrade and Banja Luka. The technology being introduced includes reconnaissance and attack drones, such as the Lanius X, Magni X, and Hermes 900 models, as well as electronic warfare systems and heavy artillery.
Beyond direct sales, the influence of Tel Aviv is expanding through industrial joint ventures and the establishment of local production facilities for drones and ammunition in both Albania and Serbia. This shift is accompanied by rising defense budgets, with Albania aiming to increase its military spending to 3.5% of its GDP by 2030.
