Elbląg Proposed as Poland’s Future Military Metropolis

Polish futurist and urban planner Edmund Szwed has outlined a plan to transform the city of Elbląg into a "Polish Ramstein" – a large‑scale military hub that would combine advanced defence infrastructure with civilian amenities. The project envisions a total investment of about 200 billion złoty, of which only 12 billion złoty would be required up‑front; the initial outlay would be reimbursed to the Ministry of Defence within five years, creating a net‑zero cost for the state.

Key components include a ring of 54 000 single‑family, plus‑energy homes for military personnel and families, premetro lines linking the base to the Tricity region, and facilities for aircraft such as F‑35 fighters, C‑130 Hercules transports, C‑295M CASA and PZL M28 Bryza. The demographic impact could raise Elbląg’s population from roughly 112 000 to 328 000 residents, reshaping the city’s economic and administrative role in northern Poland.
