Elbląg region faces demographic aging and shifting business trends
A new strategic development project for the Elbląg Functional Area highlights significant demographic challenges, including an aging population and declining birth rates. In 2025, the elderly dependency ratio in Elbląg reached 37.8%, exceeding both the national and regional averages.
Data indicates a trend of negative net migration and a decreasing natural population increase. Interestingly, the rural Elbląg municipality shows a higher density of registered businesses per 1,000 residents (137) compared to the city of Elbląg (128). Experts suggest this is driven by suburbanization, where micro and small enterprises relocate to rural areas alongside residents, while the city continues to attract larger entities.
The strategy covers the Elbląg and Braniewo cities and several surrounding municipalities, including Frombork, Tolkmicko, and Pasłęk. Economic infrastructure in the region includes the Elbląg Technological Park and the Warmian-Masurian Special Economic Zone.
