Elche begins dismantling historic façade for new municipal building

The Elche City Council has started preparatory work for the removal of the protected historic façade of the Riegos El Progreso building. Scaffolding has been erected to enable the manual dismantling, which will take place after the August festivals. Each architectural element – frontón, cornisa, sillares and zócalo – will be numbered, catalogued and stored for later re‑assembly, preserving the original configuration of the structure.

The recovered pieces will be incorporated into a new municipal building on the same site, planned to house municipal offices, improve urban image and restore two traffic lanes. Archaeological surveys and geotechnical studies are also being carried out alongside the façade work.
