Elche faces camping boom amid urban planning challenges
The municipality of Elche is experiencing a surge in interest for outdoor tourism, with approximately ten projects currently in various stages of administrative processing. These proposals include conventional campsites, caravan parking areas, and complexes combining plots with bungalows.
If all pending initiatives are realized, the municipality could provide more than 8,000 tourist spots, significantly increasing the current capacity of approximately 2,400. However, these developments face regulatory hurdles due to the General Urban Development Plan approved in 1998, which was designed for a different territorial and tourism model. While some projects have already secured environmental licenses, others remain in the process of obtaining necessary permits.
