Elche launches free summer school program for vulnerable children

The Elche city council has opened a free summer school scheme in the neighborhoods of Los Palmerales and Carrús‑Este. From early July through the month, the CEIP Miguel Hernández will host 80 children aged three to twelve who are referred by municipal social services. The program offers a range of activities, including workshops on crafts, gardening, percussion, sport, basic hygiene and nutrition, as well as swimming sessions and outings. Each participant also receives a €140 direct stipend to support families during August, and free school meals are provided throughout July.

The initiative, presented by councilor Aurora Rodil, expands to a second site, the CEIP Giner de los Ríos, and involves local partners such as the Federation of Gypsy Associations of Alicante, the Casa de la Dona and the Tamarit Association. A related news bulletin highlights the same summer school’s focus on nutrition and hygiene workshops for the most vulnerable children.

The effort aims to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged youngsters by combining educational, recreational and basic support services during the summer months.
