DOP Granada Mollar de Elche expects 50,000-ton harvest
The DOP Granada Mollar de Elche has projected a harvest of approximately 50,000 tons for the 2026-2027 season. However, officials estimate that about 15% of this volume will lack commercial viability due to 'albardado'—sun damage to the fruit's skin caused by rising temperatures.
Chef Ferran Adrià officially inaugurated the season by performing the symbolic first cut of a pomegranate at the Casa Gran d’Asprella estate in Las Bayas. The event coincided with the tenth anniversary of the product's Protected Designation of Origin (DOP).
Francisco Oliva, president of the DOP Regulatory Council, noted that the Mollar de Elche is the only pomegranate variety in the world with a Protected Designation of Origin. He expressed hope that market demand and favorable weather will reward the efforts of local farmers.
