Elche records over 11 million vehicle movements during summer

The city of Elche recorded over 11.1 million vehicle movements between June and August, averaging more than 121,000 daily transits during the summer months. Data collected via the ‘Vive Elche’ traffic camera and sensor project indicates that July saw the highest mobility with 3.87 million movements, followed by August with 3.76 million.

Passenger cars accounted for the vast majority of travel, representing 9.2 million movements, or more than 80% of all recorded transits. Mobility Councilor Claudio Guilabert noted that these objective data points provide a real-time view of city movement for the first time, allowing for more precise decision-making regarding urban mobility.

Approximately 89% of the vehicles were registered in the province of Alicante. Among those traveling from outside the province, Madrid was the primary origin with nearly 700,000 transits, followed by Murcia and Valencia. The system also identified vehicles from approximately 50 different nationalities, with France leading international presence at 22,480 movements, followed by Germany and Poland.

The Elche festivities also contributed to significant traffic spikes, with over 1.15 million movements recorded during an eight-day period. The highest single-day volume occurred on August 7, the day of the proclamation, reaching 161,606 movements.
