Elda and Burgos municipalities act to remove litter from river and festival grounds

The town council of Elda in Spain has installed new retention nets in the Vinalopó River to capture wet‑wipe waste that has been accumulating in the riverbed. The measures aim to prevent further environmental damage, reduce blockages in the sewage system and improve the river’s ecosystem. The initiative follows earlier clean‑up efforts that removed tonnes of discarded wipes.

In Burgos, authorities responded to the annual Jira del Curpillos celebration in the Parque de la Quinta with a large‑scale clean‑up operation. Emergency services provided 92 medical attendances, mainly for excessive alcohol consumption, and transferred 22 people to the regional hospital. Simultaneously, a cleaning team removed about 20 tonnes of waste from the park, deploying containers, bins and numerous vehicles over several days.

Both actions illustrate municipal efforts in Spain to manage litter and protect public and environmental health during routine and event‑related activities.
