Elder Basil Iveriotis commemorated one year after passing

A retrospective marks one year since the passing of Elder Basil Iveriotis (born Gonitakis, 1936–2025). The former abbot of Stavronikita Monastery and later Iviron Monastery is remembered for his significant impact on both the Church and society.

The commemoration highlights his notable appearance at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the spring of 1980. During the ‘Free Dialogue’ student events, his speech at the Polytechnic School drew a diverse and massive audience, reflecting a period when Mount Athos began to serve as a spiritual refuge for many young people, including those from revolutionary or anarchist backgrounds seeking a different way of life.
