Elderly athletes challenge physical limits through swimming and triathlons
Older adults are demonstrating significant physical endurance through competitive sports. In Ibiza, 72-year-old Italian rock singer Gianna Nannini completed a triathlon consisting of 750 meters of swimming, 17 kilometers of cycling, and 5 kilometers of running. Nannini, who trained with Olympic walker Alex Schwazer, stated that the activity improves circulation and helps her avoid physical stagnation.
In Germany, 92-year-old Hannelore Zanussi participated in a 24-hour swimming event in Haar. Despite a wrist sprain, she completed 3,500 meters. Zanussi attributes her fitness to daily exercise, including running and cycling, alongside a balanced diet.
These individual achievements contrast with broader health trends. Data from the German Federal Ministry of Health indicates that over half of people over 65 do not get enough exercise, and three out of four people over 80 are insufficiently active. The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity for older adults.
