Elderly care crisis reported in Härryda, Sweden
Safety representatives in Härryda municipality are raising alarms regarding a crisis in elderly care. Yvonne Kanthe and Lisbeth Olofsson, who possess over 75 years of combined professional experience, report that staff shortages and high stress levels at the Ekdalagårdens care facility are compromising basic care and resident safety.
The representatives note that reduced staffing on dementia wards has led to a loss of essential activities, such as walks and outings, which were common a decade ago. They also highlighted safety concerns, noting that inexperienced temporary staff often lack the necessary support from senior colleagues to manage difficult situations. This pressured environment is reportedly contributing to the departure of experienced personnel.
In a separate regional development, Östersund municipality is piloting a preventative home training program for seniors. The initiative aims to improve strength, balance, and mobility to help elderly residents maintain independence and reduce the need for intensive care services.
