Elderly care initiatives combat loneliness via robotics and volunteer services

Efforts to combat loneliness and social isolation among the elderly are being addressed through both technological innovation and community-based volunteer services in Germany.

Casio has developed Moflin, a small, AI-powered robotic companion designed to provide emotional support to seniors. Resembling a small animal, the robot uses artificial intelligence to react to light, touch, and sound. It is designed to develop an individual personality over time through positive reinforcement, expressing various emotional states such as joy, relaxation, or loneliness to help soothe users and provide companionship.

In parallel, traditional social interventions continue to play a vital role. In the Gütersloh district, approximately 120 volunteers participate in visiting services coordinated by the German Red Cross and local family centers. These services aim to reduce isolation and indirectly support dementia prevention by providing regular social contact and mental stimulation for older adults.
