Elderly depression rates and diagnostic challenges highlighted in Brazil and Portugal

Research indicates significant mental health challenges among the elderly in different regions. In Cuiabá, Brazil, a study involving 373 seniors found that 29% exhibit depressive symptoms. Key associated factors include vulnerability, cognitive deficits, and comorbidities. The study noted that the elderly population in Brazil has grown by 56% since 2010, yet social structures remain unprepared to meet their specific demands. The majority of those affected in the study were female, identified as Black or mixed-race, and living alone.

In Portugal, data from the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge suggests that while most elderly individuals are not depressed, depression remains the most frequent psychiatric disorder in this age group. A major challenge is the lack of diagnosis, as symptoms are often mistaken for natural aging or dementia. These symptoms frequently manifest as physical complaints, such as persistent pain, fatigue, or digestive issues, rather than overt sadness, leading families to overlook treatable conditions.
