Elderly education programs in Brazil highlight lifelong learning

Educational programs for the elderly in Brazil are highlighting the importance of lifelong learning and social inclusion. At the Universidade Aberta à Maturidade (UAMA), 78-year-old Socorro Araújo Coutinho has become a central figure and a reference for other participants after completing a course in Human Aging Education in 2015.

In Pato Branco, the Universidade Aberta à Pessoa Idosa (UNAPI)—a partnership between Afya Centro Universitário de Pato Branco and the local government—celebrated its 25th anniversary. The institution announced a name change from Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade (UNATI) to UNAPI to better reflect a modern understanding of aging that prioritizes the individual's identity and agency.
