Elderly health in Brazil: Risks of falls and prevention
In Brazil, falls are a leading cause of accidents among the elderly. According to the Ministry of Health and data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study on the Health of the Elderly (ELSI-Brasil), approximately one in four elderly individuals suffers a fall annually. For those over the age of 80, this rate increases to 40%.
Falls pose significant risks, including fractures, loss of autonomy, and reduced mobility. Factors contributing to these accidents include vision changes, decreased reflexes, muscle loss, balance issues, and neurological or cardiovascular conditions. Environmental hazards such as loose rugs, slippery floors, poor lighting, and cluttered walkways also increase risk, particularly in bathrooms and stairways.
Medical professionals recommend regular physical activity focused on strength, balance, and mobility to mitigate these risks. Additionally, any fall incident should be addressed immediately, even if no immediate injury is apparent.
