Elderly housing and financial management challenges

As the population ages, elderly individuals face complex challenges regarding housing and financial management. Case studies highlight the risks of unplanned spending and unsuitable living arrangements.

A 68-year-old single man with 30 million yen in retirement funds faced a financial crisis after purchasing a condominium for 15 million yen. Despite having a monthly pension of 150,000 yen, a lack of structured spending and a sedentary lifestyle led to rapid depletion of savings.

Other challenges involve the mismatch between home size and actual needs. One 78-year-old woman regretted rebuilding her home into a large 4LDK layout to accommodate visiting family, only to find the extra rooms unused as family members now prefer staying in hotels. Similarly, a 79-year-old widow struggles with the emotional and physical management of unused spaces in her home, such as a deceased spouse's room, which creates tension with family members concerned about safety and clutter.

Data from the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research and the Cabinet Office indicate a rising trend in single-person elderly households, emphasizing the growing need for effective long-term housing and asset management strategies.
