Elderly housing conditions show major disparities across Swedish municipalities

Discussions regarding elderly care and housing in Sweden highlight a growing gap between political debate and the practical needs of an aging population. While healthcare often dominates political discourse, the specific issue of senior housing remains underrepresented despite nearly 30 percent of voters being over the age of 65.

According to a ranking by LF Fastighetsförmedling, living conditions for the elderly vary significantly across Swedish municipalities. Vallentuna was ranked last among surveyed municipalities due to high rents, estimated moving taxes, low perceived security with home care services, and a shortage of specialized housing placements. In contrast, Storuman rose from seventh to first place, being named the best municipality for the elderly.

Large cities also face challenges; Malmö was ranked as the worst among Sweden’s three largest cities, while Stockholm and Gothenburg remain below the national average. Experts attribute these disparities to both national housing policies and varying municipal approaches to elderly care.
