Elderly Japanese couple downsizes to station-front condo for easier retirement

An elderly couple in Japan has transitioned from a large suburban detached house to a high-rise condominium near a train station to improve their quality of life in retirement. The couple, aged 73 and 71, found that maintaining a large home and relying on a car became increasingly burdensome as they aged.

By selling their previous residence, they were able to fund the purchase of a 60-square-meter apartment located within a three-minute walk of a station. The new location offers easy access to supermarkets, pharmacies, and medical clinics, allowing them to manage daily tasks on foot. This shift aligns with trends noted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which highlight that elderly households increasingly prioritize accessibility and proximity to essential services when considering housing changes.
