Paros mayor landfill fire arrests Greek waste site anti‑arson investigation

A wildfire broke out at 13:15 on 28 July 2026 inside the municipal waste‑landfill (CHYTA) on the Greek island of Paros. The fire quickly spread across low‑vegetation terrain, burning more than 12,000 stremmata and prompting a strong response from fire brigades, volunteers and coastal rescue units.

The Anti‑Arson Investigation Unit of the Cyclades examined the incident and placed four local officials under arrest on suspicion of aggravated arson or severe negligence: Mayor Konstantinos Bizas, the deputy mayor for sanitation, the contractor managing the waste‑disposal facility and a municipal waste‑truck driver. They were later released pending further investigation and each received an administrative fine of €8,437.50.

Authorities also linked the Paros blaze to a wider series of fires, reporting eight arrests across Greece—including suspects in Crete, Euboea and Laconia—for either attempted arson or negligent fire‑setting. The investigation continues to assess causes such as self‑ignition of waste, a possible glass fragment, a cigarette or another ignition source inside the waste pile. Evacuation messages were issued for several villages as firefighting crews continued to combat remaining hotspots on the island.
