Elderly woman dies following jewelry theft in Batticaloa

A 65-year-old woman from Kallattrai died after being drugged during a jewelry theft in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. Relatives have raised allegations regarding the circumstances of her death.

According to reports, a husband and wife, who were previously arrested in connection with an incident involving a mother and child found in a well in Kokkachticholai, allegedly targeted the victim at the Batticaloa main bus stand. The suspects reportedly engaged the woman in conversation and offered her fruit juice laced with sedatives, warning her about local thieves to gain her trust.

After the woman removed her gold jewelry to secure it in her bag, the suspects allegedly administered the drugged juice, causing her to lose consciousness. The pair fled with her gold bracelets and necklace. The victim was admitted to a hospital approximately four hours later in an unconscious state, but she subsequently succumbed to health complications, including kidney issues, exacerbated by her diabetes.
