Elderly woman drowns at Tarragona beach as region records fifth summer death
A woman in her late seventies died on June 27 after drowning at the beach of L'Arquitecte in La Ampolla, Tarragona, Catalonia. The area was unguarded at the time. Witnesses pulled the unconscious swimmer from the water and emergency services, including a medical helicopter, attempted resuscitation on the sand, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is the fifth drowning fatality recorded on Catalan coasts since the official summer bathing season began on June 15. Earlier incidents this month include three minors who drowned at other beaches in the Tarragona province. Authorities have highlighted the need for beach supervision and public awareness as the number of drownings rises rapidly at the start of the season.
