Elderly woman's body found buried in backyard in Târgu Bujor, Romania, amid pension fraud probe
In Târgu Bujor, a town in Galați County, Romania, the body of an 86‑year‑old woman was discovered buried behind the house she shared with her granddaughter and the granddaughter’s husband. Neighbours said the woman had not been seen for about a year, yet her monthly pension of roughly 2,200 lei continued to be collected. Police opened a criminal investigation for possible homicide, grave desecration, fraud and falsification of documents, and are questioning the granddaughter and her husband, who remain free. Prosecutors noted forensic analysis indicates the corpse had been interred for up to two years. The case is being handled by the Târgu Bujor prosecutor’s office. A former policeman neighbour said, “Nu am mai văzut‑o cam de un an de zile…”, while a relative expressed suspicion that the death was staged to keep the pension money.
