Elderly Women Honored in Estella, Navarre
Four women—Aurora Garrués (95), Mercedes Ortigosa (102), Teresa Díez, and Francisca Chasco—were celebrated on 3 August 2026 in Estella‑Lizarra, Navarre. The ceremony took place under the trees of the Julián Romano music school in the Los Llanos park, highlighting the pioneering lives of these women who were born before the Spanish Civil War. Attendees included municipal officials, the local giant‑parade, and the folk‑song group Orgullo Navarro. The event was later moved to the municipal senior centre Ega, where music with a Mexican accent was performed.
The tribute emphasized the historic role of Mercedes Ortigosa as the first female public servant in Navarre, her work at the property registry, and Francisca Chasco’s memory of running the Pamplona bull‑run disguised as a man because women were not allowed to participate at the time.
